From the reading ive done, I came to the same conclusion. Very helpful post thank you. I am going to dose 2 part so wc will not be that critical from my understanding, unless I have a nitrate spike. Which is pretty rare right?

As you can see by now, you get a lot of different opinions concerning water changes. I agree with Peredhil in that WCs are for importing depleted elements or removing nutrients; otherwise, you're just wasting time and salt. However, every system is different. Volume, amount and density of rock, stock level, type(s) of livestock, filtration, etc., etc., etc. all play their part in making each system unique. Bottom line is, only your tank can tell you how often you need to change water.

10% once a week. Try not to slack. It it much easier preventing algae than getting rid of it.

    10% on a 30g?

Must be nice, 3g water changes?

One of the advantages of a smaller DT

When I had freshwater, had discus and plants, I would do a weekly 45 gallon water change once a week. But I didnt have to worry about buying salt, ill probably cut it down to a 20 gallon chenge once a week when its done cycling. Oh it's a 150 gallon tank.

Depending on your system it could actually be much easier to do small weekly changes.I find it easier with my all manual 40breeder with no ATO or dosing pumps. You could find doing changes that frequently unnecessary and I might also but that would require more testing and dosing so it's kind of a trade off.
