Well my wife was pleased to hear I announsed my retirement to pro am mx a couple years ago she said well now what.... I sai I want to build a salt water fish tank. I had a 300 gallon fresh water tank in the wall she said just put a flat screen in my bedroom and you get whatever you want. Keep in mind I spent 18k a year to race and travel. So She has a 50 in flat screen in the bedroom and I have a 220 gallon right below it. I wont say what the reciepts say but it exceeds 20k. This includes the 92 gallon corner tank in my sons room that he built and the red sea max with custom sump and the 3 40 gallon breeders that we keep for frags.

I do the same thing. I've got a new build going on and I have a spreadsheet built with everything I am going to need. It has columns for "estimated cost" and "actual cost" that way at the end of the build I can see how far off I was.

I've even got a column for how many plugs each item will have that way I know how many outlets I will need for my controller ;D

Well I am including everything in my number including fish food, chemicals, filter replacement, carbon, Fish, corals, Salt, etc over the years it adds up. I own a buisness so I keep track of my reciepts for everything and just have kept good record on what I have spent. I have saved a ton by swapping frags, getting fish of local clubs etc but this is still an expensive hobby. Still less then when I was racing pro mx.

I always tell the wife how awesome ______product is and she tells me how much? I say "never ask me that question". Then the line of questioning stops. I still do freshwater plant scapes...all ADA products...good lord...

I am only about 6 months into this hobby and I bought a lot of my stuff used and was even given some items and I would still say that I've spent somewhere in the neighborhood of $1500, maybe more and I haven't even started getting into the corals yet. Lucky for me, my wife is very supportive of my hobby and doesn't care what the costs are as long as she gets to pick out some fish.

    90 gal. Tank, stand, lights - $300
    Live Rock - $400
    Live Sand - $150
    Salt - $80
    Powerheads - $120
    Sump - $150
    Livestock - $300

There's $1500 right there and I haven't even included all the misc. items I am forgetting about and I was even given a protein skimmer, 2 pumps and an overflow box

i have no clue on how much i have spent but I am thinking 15k plus since starting! If I think too hard about what I have spent I would wish myself that I would have never entered the hobby and used the money for something else. However I DO REALLY ENJOY it so probably best I dont think about it too much. Sadly due to some issues with tanks breaking, heaters malfunctioning and large golden puffers puffing, dont have a whole lot to show for it right now!

I started working part time at a LFS again to help support this habit, so I do know what I spent in the last month which is 1k (made maybe 150.00 or so......so much better deal for the store). Today will be going in to pick up the stand for our new tank, a 120g starphire tank that we bought this summer. We kept thinking we would DYI a stand, but finally realized neither of us have the time nor energy to build one. So I think with the new tank set up that amount will go up very fast!
