Hey guys, I was wondering. Is it possible to have a sump/refugium next to a tank?

A friend of mine is giving me a 75G tank but it isnt drilled or anything, so I will need to get an overflow box. ( what's the rating I need to get for this btw?)

I was just wondering, since the tank will be on a counter and not on a stand. Is it possible to have the sump/refugium sitting on the same counter?
It would be a standard 29G I believe.

Gravity is your problem. If both tanks are roughly the same height, there is nothing to overflow in to... The only way I see it possible would be to add a third tank below.

No matter what you choose, I cannot with clear conscience recommend hob overflows. I have flooded my apartment/house more times than I care to admit. From here on out, I am a drilled-only kinda guy.

Wouldnt that require me to drill? that's really not an option for me.

and the 29G is shorter than the 75G for sure, but Is it enough?

Drilling is easy!! I was so nervous when i drilled my tank, but a few minutes later, all was fine nd i m so glad i did. If not being able to do a stand is the issue, then it looks like no fuge for you :(

For many drilling is not an option. Also thousands have used/using overflow boxes with much success. Do some research. Learn from the *mistakes* of others and do what you are most comfortable with. Have you thought about a HOB fuge? Do some research on line on the DIY HOB Fuges, CPR Aquatics is a good place to start. I run one on my 26g and love it! I keep my cheato/LR rubble and heater in it. I'm sure you could make one yourself to fit your needs :)

Hmm.. I had not thought about that. Do you think a hang on back for a 75G would be viable?

what about mechanical filtration and carbon? Skimmers and the like.

how high of a distance does the over flow box have to be in order to work? The 20-29G is shorter than the 75G so wouldnt that count for something? or does it need to be a lot higher?

I'd get a return hole drilled in your new tank/fuge near the top. Then I'd set that tank about 6"s above your DT and let it gravity feed down, this will also help with your pod population!. Then just get a pump to get water into the new fuge! This is the best way to do it, IMO, if your pump fails, no flood! No water going up=no water coming down!

I have a CPR HOB fuge on my 55g thats growing pods like crazy and keeping my nitrates down, def a viable option. Although there are cheaper alternatives now! But a large HOB is what your basically asking how to make!
