Matt - 28 dba is "very quiet" for a computer fan" - esp. for a large one - Commonly dba over 100 on ones this size -

This is about as "quiet" as they get (turned on ;) )

What really interests me - and someone might want to check out if thinking about putting in a new DYI cooling system are the various computer fan controllers..Don't think they need a motherboard interface & expect they run off 28 VDC also (same as fans) -

Not a bad price for temperature and "volume" control -

Ultra bright blue LED lights combine perfectly with the Black or Silver housing. Nexus Fan Controller is great for Large CFM fans and fits perfectly in your 3.5" drive bay.

yes, I just revived the oldes thread ever. get over it

    question:
I have 2 3" coralife fans in my canopy running off of a radio shack power brick (the front says "3-12v 800mA") and it has the adjustable thing..
they run the fans fine, but I am upgrading my lighting so I need some more flow.

I just picked up 2 vantec 120mm and was planning on using this power brick.. I plugged one in and it spins fine, but seems like it should be spinning alot faster. Then I put the other one in series and they both slow down... what kind of power does these things need and is this radio shack thing enough? what do I need?? Need help asap, as I need to put these lights in even asap'r

    Thanks
    -mario

Dimmers, look for ones rated for non-linear or inductive
loads. For your purpose, it is best to avoid dimmers rated for incandescent
or linear loads only. You'll want the kind of dimmer used
for ceiling fans or range hood fans. Even with an appropriate
dimmer, there is still no guarantee that your fan is going to like
being dimmed. A lot of the dimmer switches slow motors down with
a pulse of the same voltage which is going to cause your fan to hum
in order to get the disired affect you want to actually slow the AC motor down
not turn it on and off really quickly at differant rates.
