Ive got a guestion about the HOB filters(like the ones from wal-mart) for saltwater usage, I bought a used 29 gal SW set up today w/ stand HOB filter and lights with about 35# of LR 2" SB w/ 2 clowns and 2 damsels. Its really nothing real fancy but a nice little setup and I got a really good deal on it so I bought it. My question is about the filter. is it safe to run this type of filter on a SW tank? is there anything I need to be concerned about? I was told the tank had been running for a little over a year with no problems.

I ran a set-up just like that for a long time. The live rock will handle the majority of the filtration and the HOB filter will be a good place to run carbon. The biggest concern with the HOB will be keeping the filter media clean. I would replace the carbon cartridges every two weeks. This will keep fresh carbon in there and also keep detritus from building up on the cartridges. I would recommend adding a power head to get a little bit more flow going in the tank.

I actually have a complete sump, skimmer and overflow for a tank but my pump is to big like 700 GPH flow. I just got the tank today and its set up just as I bought it. I am worried about it myself but the person I got it told my it had been running like that for over a year This is FOWLR . She was big into FW tanks I saw 4 running in her living room and a brand new 75 sitting there waiting on the rock to be delivered and she told me there were 2 more in her bedroom (Ididnt see them).

I suggest a small powerhead and an HOB skimmer. Live rock will handle the biological filtration.

they're not really helpful (you can use them to run carbon, etc. though). They're not harmful either.
