LOL oh I know, but I have no intentions of KEEPING it, Thats why Im asking really how fast they grow, I would like to enjoy a baby one if I could for a while. I asked the LFS and the guy said I could keep one for about a year, but that just doesn't seem right..

I would say about a year or two at most also. I haven't seen the enormous growth that people describe.

the honest answer from me is "I dont know"

one of the major disadvantages of doing it, is it puts you in a no win situation
should the fish lose its life early in the proceedings, your then subject to the "I told you a Hippo should not be in a 40" type posts or variations on that theme some of them polite, some of them not so polite

my opinion is, you should purchase fish, suitable for the size of tank you have and not purchase with the "I can upgrade or exchange" philosophy in mind

for the upgrade arguement - my feelings would be
if your going to get a 120 in 6 months, why buy the Hippo now?
buy it in 6 months when you have the 120

for the return to LFS arguement - my feelings are
a large % of fish purchased with that idea in mind, never make it back to the LFS

for people who have a hippo in a 40 gallon breeder - I do not have an issue with that
for people who are asking if they should add a hippo to a 40 gallon breeder - my advice would be 'don't do it"

Hm... I don't know. Im iffy on it, I would buy one if I could keep it for a little while, I by no means plan on keeping a hippo tang in a 40 gal breeder forever trust me I know thats horrible, I just was wondering if anyone has seen one grow from that small.. they have a tiny baby one at the store, I just don't want to get one and have it outgrow the tank within a really short period of time.

Thanks steve for your honest opinion! I think your right, I don't think it would be a good idea. I will find more suitable fish, or get a bigger tank of course ;)
