It is a great idea IMO

I certainly use the search function very often
because its a great source of material when researching anything
under those circumstances the more results I get the happier I am
as even in throwaway threads, there may be a pearl of wisdom from 1 poster on it
that provides useful information or sends me off on a tangent to find out more about what they mentioned

    with the above said

for newcomers not familiar with the site
for newcomers into the reef keeping hobby
the fact is they are going to ask about "why is my tank covered in brown algae, I only set it up 6 weeks ago and its a real mess already"

and I am still more than happy to continue answering the same questions on a weekly basis in order to help those newcomers to the site, and into the hobby

just wanted to make that clear for any newbies reading this thread
who may have a question, but are now hesitant about asking it.

I will dedicate some time tonight at editing the thread I have started. I believe that I do the tags on some of them, but you're right... not on all of them.

Well I didn't start this to get people to stop posting there questions. I like answering them when I can. I was merely pointing out the search engine because to tell you the truth when I joined I just thought it was a link to Google.(forum noob) So my main objective was to get more people to do the research for themselves if they wanted to especially on the simpler subjects. I never said stop posting your opinions or your diy or whatever you want.

    Hey Vinny

I knew that, because I know your a helpful person
a newcomer may not know that - but they will do now thanks to you mentioning it here

hence my post was for their benefit
and not a contradiction of your post or your intentions
which I whole heartedly agree with

the search is a very valuable tool

You know, guys? I see a lot of great ideas here, but nothing really made more sense to me than when I read Peredhil's post about rating threads that are genuinely helpful and informative. Honestly, the thread rating button has always escaped my sight, but tt is a great way to filter things, IMO if people use it correctly.

The problem would arise when threads are rated before getting results. But all in all, I think rating helpful threads is the way to go. Or also a conjunction of all the very good points that everyone made.

I will start rating threads as I find them helpful, accurate, etc and thus creating a habit of my own. Hopefully, everyone will eventually act on that as well. Great idea.
