as long as your not putting the 30 gallons into the 55 gallon tank and filling the rest up with your ro/tap water, than yes (otherwise your going to cause a sever case of hyposalinity- which will likely be fatal to your inhabitants) But you still have to ensure that you water is being filtered, heated, etc.

In addition to this, if your doubling up your water volume tomorrow- you better make sure that the salinity/temp/pH are all bang on before you start mixing that second 'new' batch of water into your existing one. (cause that is a very large amount of water to introduce all at once)

I got the fish and everyone in a bucket right now. they've been in there for over an hour.

I used most of the sand from the old 30 gallon, and most of the water. I'm hungry. :(

dont add the fish to the tank now then. do you have a airpump? if not walmart probably sells them.

I'm gonna ask it and recommend no one try it, but if you have I'd like feedback. In such an emergency, grocery stores sell "Sea Salt". would this be usable to raise the SG, obviously noting it'd be missing most if not all of the trace minerals and elements in the normal salt.

it probably would work, but it would be empty salt, like you said missing stuff, and eventually if you have corals you would need to do several massive water changes to make sure the corals get what the need.

it wouldnt be worth the risk, if they put some anti caking agent that kills the fish. i dont think it would be worth the extra work that replaces the flawed salt either.

if you remember to make the water 24 hours in advance you will never have that problem.

edit: it would be like saving all your saltcreep in a bucket and using it for a water change :)

Time zones so its a bit late
but could he take some water out , boil it so FW evaporates and then put the higher SG water back into his tank?

maybe if the tank was smaller, provided he lets it cools down. unless he has a cauldron and a way to rapidly cool it down by the time he finishes doing that the stores will be open lol.

also i dont like the idea of the cooking residues in the tank, not to mention the toxic chemical and carcinogens teflon coated pans leech at high temperatures.

it wasnt a bad idea just impractical with a tank that size, and you need to have non-teflon coated pans, that arent cast iron(because you dont wash caste iron) or brass/copper.
