I have this really odd shaped coral piece, dead of course, and I have no idea what it used to be. Currently, it's covered in bryopsis, but I'm working on that. I'm gonna pull off that I can and try to get a good pic of it.

    Point of this thread?

I'm looking for a nice encrusting coral to make me want to keep this eyesore. Something that's gonna spread fast and make me not hate this piece. Of course I'm gonna wait until the ugly bryopsis is gone. Treatment starts soon. Pic tomorrow hopefully.

Bryopsis? I would pull it and throw it in the trash. Fighting that kind of hair algae should remain your priority and worrying about corals can be down the road a touch in my opinion. Eradicating the hair is time consuming and even once accomplished I suggest you stabilize your tank for at least one month and I would go two before introducing anything new.

That being said, coralline algae will cover the skeleton nicely. Look to softies that you can attach to it and watch them spread. Xenia and green star polyps are potential fast growers depending on your tank.

May I ask what you are doing to control the HA ? Have you identified and corrected the cause?

If it's just on that piece, why not pull it out of the tank and bleach it?

No, the bryopsis is everywhere. That's why you'd recommended Kent Tech M. It is the Biggest problem spot, yes. And I have contemplated throwing it away many a time, but I think it could look awesome with a colorful piece encrusting.
