Hi i just have a question about adding the mandarin fish i have a damsel, 2 clownfish, a blue tang and a yellow tang. I have had my tank for almost a year now and is very well established now i have read that mandarin fish need to eat allot of live food grown in the tank and i have allot of them.

My question is i heard it will fight allot and will fight till dead with the damsel and i really want the get rid of the damsel but im not able to take it out of my tank and i have allot of live rock and allot of corals it would be a mess if i tare apart my tank just to take out the damsel.

Do you think that it will be OK to add the mandarin a good size between 2 and 3" i dont care if the mandarin kills the damsel but i dont think it will because the damsel are some motherf.... jajajaj. So help what to do because i really want and love the mandarin.

Also is it reef safe i read that it is and heard that it is.

Just use a fish trap to catch the damsel, if you really think it will be a problem.
Use the search on here for a diy fish trap.

Ok a few things the mandarin is a really picky eater and needs to eat copepods and Amphipods which you should have if your tank is over a year old and you have a lot of good live rock. Some mandarins will eat frozen Mysis if you are lucky ask at the fish store if they have one that has accepted frozen food. The mandarin is not going to kill your damsel under any circumstances it is a very peacful fish The damsel or any other aggresive fish can and probably will terrorize the mandarin and could even kill or force it to jump out of the tank. If you have a very aggressive damsel I would be careful adding the mandarin I am speaking from experience I had a nasty blue devil damsel that terrorized quite a few fish I had to trap and remove him.

here's a very simple fish trap. Get a two liter soda bottle (clear) cut it 1/4 down from the top invert it back into the bottle and glue it with some aquarium sealant. that's all you have to do, not to catch the fish place some food inside of the bottle and wait for the fish to swim in. Good luck and happy reefing

I have a mandarin, right now in a 24 gal- it eats frozen food, but I also have lots of bugs for him. My clown fish gets protective of her territory and will push the mandarin out of the way, but this is all she will do because Mandarins are poisonious (at least this is what the lfs told me) Good luck they are beautiful fish. :)
ps- I am upgrading to a 120 right now, so the mandarin can have his space and the clown can have hers.
