    Hi all,

My name is Chris and I am still very new to the hobby.

I never really was that big into fish, but my parents always had freshwater tanks when I was growing up.

Anyways, I saw this show called Tanked in which they build custom aquariums for people. I was very impressed and started doing some research.

I then came across a forum all about puffer fish which really made me interested. I spent quite a bit of time reading up on them and what requirements were necessary to keep these guys. Well, I made up my mind that I was going to buy a saltwater tank and make it a FOWLR and put a Green Spotted Puffer or 2 in there.

Thus began my search. I checked local stores at first, but after seeing some of the costs, I decided to make a spreadsheet. After doing this, I realized how much it would cost me to start up what I wanted (30+ gallon with everything) and became very discouraged.

I then began looking on craigslist. Within a month of looking, I found someone selling a 55g saltwater setup for an unbeatable price ($150 for everything). I contacted them and long story short, I ended up purchasing it.

As part of the deal, I was also give the fish that came with the tank. I ended up getting 3 Damsel Fish, 1 Maroon Clownfish, and a Watchman Goby/Tiger Pistol pair.

At first, I thought about selling them to get my puffer, but then I decided it would be best to keep them and see how I do with saltwater. After all, this was my first tank.

Anyways, I still have all of the fish (minus one of the damsels as it was murdered by one of the other damsels) and am just starting to get into corals now.

Sorry for the long introduction, but figured it would be good to give some background :). I'll post a different thread with my current tank setup.

    Thanks Steve!

So far I must say I am very happy with it. There is still a lot for me to learn, but I tend to pick things up quickly :)

Welcome and congrats on the purchase! you've already done what most of alot of us didn't! researched and had patience! I think learning with these fish is a great idea! When a problem arises, ask these guys questions they're great! Keep taking your time so you can build to the ultimate puffer tank!

Oh yeah, damsels are devils! lol!

    Thanks cosmo!

I agree, Damsels are devils. I really want to trade them in (or at least the overly aggressive one) but I feel bad. I feel like I'd be letting the guy that I bought the tank from down, lol.

As for puffers, as much as I'd love to have them I don't think it will happen :(. I don't have the space for a sump or anywhere to breed snails. That, and if I keep adding corals, well, the puffers will eat them from what I've read.
