Hello all, I've been reading posts on this forum for quite some time now and finally decided to join. I have always been fascinated with marine life, and have had freshwater setups for the greater part of my life. Recently, my wife and I have decided to take the plunge into saltwater. The goal is to eventually graduate to a full on reef, but as this is our first saltwater setup the plan is to start with fish only.

I am a scientific minded type guy, and as such I am very intrigued with the "natural" filtration techniques that I have been reading about. By that I mean the no skimmer, no carbon, turf scrubber, macroalgae refugium type stuff. I have a lot of ideas bouncing around my head right now, and since my tank is sitting empty at the moment, I have virtually unlimited options and am very eager to hear everyones inputs to my barrage of questions that I wil be posting.

In the short term I will be posting questions about everything from plumbing to live sand and rock to algae filtration in the appropriate forums, so please feel free to post any response that you like, even if it's just to tell me that I'm an idiot.

Looking forward to hearing from everyone!

    Hello and welcome to 3reef!
You won't be called an idiot here on 3reef and asking questions is a great way to learn and better yourself and it help us as well.
Best of luck to you and your switching over to the marine hobby!
You are right, the natural biological filtration array is intriguing and very important with regards to a marine aquarium.
It can be done to without the use of a skimmer as I have done it for more than a year, and that was in the presence of a Long Tentacle Pacific Anemone! Sometimes you just need to be quicker to the draw and more focused to detect and rectify problems, but it can be done.
Best of luck to you and glad you decided to join 3reef, a dedicated, knowledgeable and friendly family of aquarists with similar goals as yourself.

Coral Reefer, it's good to see someone who actually uses that type of setup. What type of issues have you ecountered using this method that may differ from a "standard", for lack of a better term, filtration setup.

Welcome to 3reef. I have yet to see anyone call someone an idiot here. Yes they may disagree but usually they just state their points and facts and leave it at that. I have found everyone to be helpful
