Is it possible to use a heating element (just the rod part) by itself with a RKL controller and temp probe turning it on and off instead of the heater's controller box?

Yes, as long as the heater is within the power rating of the reef keeper lite. I think plugs 1&4 can handle 8 amps max and 2&3 can handle 3 amps if I remember correctly. Most people prefer to run the controller also however and just turn it up a couple degrees higher so that the reef keeper still turns it on and off, but if the reef keeper were to malfunction then there is some sense of redundancy.

Thanks Don_v. That's a good point about redundancy and cheap insurance to protect against what could potentially be a very expensive chowder :)
