..did you just prove yourself wrong in the same sentence...?

Yes, I feel the same way about nature; I actually always have been amazed at what's out there in terms of watching and seeing it. I bought Planet Earth the moment it came out on Blu-Ray and watched nearly the whole thing the first weekend, just for reference.

What's really changed from keeping a saltwater tank, in my view, is the actual knowledge of at least a sliver of what goes into a real ecosystem, from bacteria up to fish. The shows tend to focus on one variety of interaction for a decent amount of time; keeping a saltwater tank, and being in such close contact with the system, (almost) forces you into seeing all of the interactions more clearly, rather than "clownfish-anemone" or "cheetah-antelope", IMO.

The amazement of being able to keep something that's normally out in the ocean in the living room is definitely up there too.

I actually appericaite it way more. I am by no means a tree hugger. My wife actually asks me all the time when a show comes on like planet earth to watch it. Then she askes me what kind of coral is that or what fish is that. The worst part of this hobby is that I do travel alot and when you go to a huge reef and see people touching and messing with or standing on corals. Its very frusterating how little respect people have for this delicate eco system. I heard the other day that live has been on earth for 225 million years but yet in only the last 100 have we wrecked this planet..... Again im not a tree hugger but wow its a reality.

I feel the same way. I have always loved nature and the outdoors, but on the reef is where I feel most at home. I am a bit of a hippy, but was raised conservative. Kinda weird there, but preserving and in many cases saving the environment, is a huge thing to me.

Actually, their sensitivity is one thing I never realized until I started getting corals for my reef tank. It's much easier to understand that the slightest touch can close up a torch coral for weeks when you're staring at it every day instead of taking a one-off dive at a reef.

Awesome post! I've always been a nature buff. Love Discovery and AP shows (check out LIFE ...UNBELIEVABLE cinematography). What started as a hobby has turned into obsession ...I simply wanted an aquarium 4 years ago. Now I have a small reef in my bedroom. Its turned into snorkeling and diving around my home in FL and parts of Belize and the Carribbean ....and the hunger builds. The day I dive the Aussie barrier and the Fiji reefs is the day ill feel my bucket list is complete!

Exactally. The problem is most people just think the reef is easily replasible. I have been diving all over the world and I have seen first hand more then one time people steping on dorals and stading with there head our of the water. The frusterating part is when they tell you not to touch or disrupt and then there is always one person that doesent get it. I am a firm beliver that fire corals should be more prevelent where mass diving is.

Lol fire corals huh? I would laugh at someone touching it and getting stung right after they were told not to touch.

I'm a tree huger.. Not to the extremes of tyingy self to a tree but I do believe that all ecosystems should be preserved If us humans want to have a chance later on, because believe it or not we are part of the foodchain and we depend on other animals and plants to survive...

The most depressing thing I have heard in a long time is that I may have already said this so sorry im repeating it but they said the other day on a show that there has been live on the planet for 225 million yes million years but it only took this century to put the world in danger! wow 225 million years and we blow it into this in only 100 years! wow!

I'm a tree hugger and proud to admit it! It's important to take care of the Earth so some of it is still around for future generations.
