So pretty much, unless I find a cheap way of shipping southdown, and a person off this board that is willing to ship it for me as close to Nova Scotia as possible, then im stuck paying 80$ per 40lb bag at my lfs eh...well, that sucks.....im almost thinking of not having a dsb now......just too redicoulously expensive.

    Once again...

Comes to just over $30 for a 50 lb bag of "Southdown" w/shipping from link I posted earlier.

Is southdown sand really the same as the Carib sand but in a different package or are you saying its' like Carib sand? I may be replacing my sand bed and south down is not available in my area. In fact, I wondered if it was a little too fine. What do most people tend to go with size wise?

At my LFS a 15 lb bag of argonite( and I think it is the Carib) is $35.00 I think that's a bit much. I may have to look into the link that you suggested in case I go that route.

    Hiya beamer...

"Southdown Playsand" is "exactly" same as Carib sand (fine "sugar sized" grade aragonite) ...both coming from same source...just different package...

Only difference is that maybe the Carib is "pre-rinsed" - I really don't know...

But if you use "Southdown" ....rinse, rinse, rinse (then one more time...before using ;) - or you will be looking at a real nice "sand cloud" for a couple of weeks)

Got mine from "Idaho Saltwater Emporium" - (link in previous post)...price comes out really resonable even taking shipping into account.

note: Heard Anthony Calfo say he bought full shipping container loads from same sand source as Southdown uses, for his coral farm operations) -

Thanks Scott, I'll keep their phone number on hand. I really prefer to do business locally with our LFS when I can but that's just too big of a price difference. I believe they wanted around 25 or so for just a 15 lb bag.

    Thanks again---Cindy

Carib sea claims there sand to be free of metals? The Southdown and quickcrete sands do not do anything do remove metals from the sand. Is this is true i do not know? But IMO metal content in DSB can lead to the crash's that have been happening alot to people lately (myself and my old 44 reef included) who run a DSB. My next sand purchase will be Carib sea. I feel why skimp on anything the second time around. I may be gunshy but i lost a 4 year old reef.

I did just set up a 26 reef with a 2" carib sea aragamax sandbed reef a year ago and must say that the algae blooms i encountered were alot less severe then my 44 with Southdown.NOt sure if i am on to anything here but Just some food for thought.

    Thanks Scott,

I know what you mean about the sand storm with south down. I used about an inch of it in my little 5 gl fuge and my whole tank staid cloudy for at least a day. I didn't rinse. I didn't even think about it until I had done it. Oh well! Idaho salt water seems to be the way to go.

I keep hoping that water changes will do the trick for high nitrates and phosphates instead of changing out the bed. I did about a 40 gl change a little while ago. I'll probably do about a 20 gl change daily for about a week and see what happens and then if needed I'll be giving Idaho a call.

    Thanks, Cindy

Hi, I saw Quikrete® Play Sand just yeterday at the Home Depot. I needed to go online to the Quikrete website to get technical info. today and it seems all their 7 sand products have silica, which is at the NIOSH Recommended standard maximum permissible concentration=0.05 mg/M3 of respirable free silica.
I noticed your question as 3rd in a Google search for "Quickrete." :) I see the correct spelling of the name is "Quikrete." ::) Good luck with your sand!
