Has anyone ever tried to move coral from a tank to the ocean?

Yes, Mike Rowe did a show on them.

BTW, most Reefballs don't have ashes of people in them. Just some do.

We saw a show on unusual burials one day (my boyfriend finds the strangest things to watch LOL) and they did a story on reef balls.

But yes, don't introduce anything from your tank (SW or FW) into the wild.

lol I had a friend that did this with a goldfish in his pond and he ended up getting fined 4,000 dollars and draining his pond to "collect" the 700 plus in his 5 acre pond NOT A GOOD IDEA IMO

My stepdad said there used to be a livestock pond he'd go to when he was in his 20's that was absolutely overrun with goldfish. Someone had dumped 'em and they took over.

Oh i deff didnt want to do it just curious how they where rebuilding the reefs and such. Looks like they do some what we do in our tanks but only use inhabitants from that area.

Similar idea as will the reafballs, is called coral gardening. When coral reefs become over-crowded, they go down in the reefs taking out some of the colonies and put them, basically on big frag plugs, or discs, made from calcium(I think) and a concrete grid...I forget what this grid is called, but once again, its like a giant version of eggcrate. They wait several months to a year, I believe, and then they take the colonies and replant them somewhere else on the ref...a less crowded area, of course.

I think they re-propegate the grown-out colonies of coral onto the reef balls, if I am not mistaken.

I had to study that in one of my biology classes. We also watched a video on them fragging and placing them on the makshift reef. Then how it grows, inverts take over, small fish make homes and then bigger more elaberate systems play out. LOVE IT
