Hi everyone. I've been thinking of getting a small hang-on refugium for my 55 gal. I JUST set it up a week ago tues with a little over 50lbs LR (so no livestock yet). I was wondering, since I don't think I'm good enough to MAKE a refug. could I just get one of those containers they use when catching the fish at the store and drill holes in it. Throw some rubble, LS and macro algae, give it a little flow and be good to go?

I THINK THE CONTAINERS YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT ARE A LITTLE ON THE SMALL SIDE, BUT I GUESS THAT IS BETTER THAN NOTHING AT ALL. MAYBE GET A FEW OF THEM. i AM ASSUMING THAT YOU PLAN TO HANG THESE ON THE INSIDE OF THE TANK AND JUST LET THE WATER FREE FLOW THROUGH?

    hi,

I uninstalled my refugium a while ago (i made it in the house with materials from home depot, and while it was not perfect mainly bc. i did not put enough time in it, it was fine.)

after, when i downgraded to a 20 gallon, i got a net in which you put baby fish, or mating pairs, put it in the tank, added caulerpa to that, and pointed a power head at it.

You would have to clean the net with every water change, as it would get dirty, and you might want a bigger one for a 55 gallon. Also, I only have two chromes and 2 scooter blennies. I took the skimmer off too (change the water every 2 weeks, and they are all fine.

but that goes on a 20, and limited livestock.
Since you might go coral or add bigger fish, with that tank, i would try to build a refugium, takes a weekend and $150 if you have the pump already.

Just another idea to play with.

    Good luck.

I'm thinking of getting the in-tank fuge. It's a 55gal and I don't know if i should get the 7" or 12". I'm mainly trying to get a good copepod population for a mandarin someday.
