I made the conversion to salt-water two months ago. I have a nice hi-flow eShopps wet dry system going (WD-75CS) in a 46 gallon bow tank. I have 50 lbs of live rock. I am planning on doing a reef and just purchased all kinds of goodies including jets, mineral bottles and more testing supplies (not relative to question but exciting for me). My question at the moment is I have a Marineland H.O.T. Magnum (250GPH) which worked wonderfully for me when the tank was freshwater. It has a micron cartridge along with the ability to use carbon or anti-ammonia pellets with it. It is not presently attached. Would it be useful for me to use this at all with the wet dry system? Algae reduction, protein skimmer, curing live rock...etc? Or should I just give it to someone that has a freshwater tank? I do have a brown algae issue at the moment that I need to tackle.

    Thank you!

the wet dry is really all ya need. but you could use the magnum for water cleaning, change the can in side to the filter add diathom earth and polish the water .i always looked at the hot mag as a hang on the back 350 just smaller

    Thank you!

Would this be separate from the tank?

I just found a great page on that with the Magnum and diatom powder. Thank you for the idea!

Welcome to 3 reef. Got any pics?
A lot of folks get into debates around here that bioballs are nitrate factories. My observation is it's hard to find someone who still uses them. I've never used them but I think it requires you to keep an eye on them for detritus build up. Your live rock is all that is necessary.
Not many people use canisters either.
As far as the brown algae.. is it like a brown powder? Also called diatoms... if so it will go away by itself. Usually takes a few weeks and is common is a new tank.

    Thank you!

I just took a pic with my G1. The water is a little dirty because I took the fake plants out and all I am not happy with the tank at the moment. I do have some brand new Geisemann T5s in there so I am happy about the lighting now (4 total - 2xAuquaBlue,Actinic+,Pure Actinic). I plan on stacking the rock today along with installing the jets. I did plan on taking the rock out, brush off the algae on the surface in a bath tub then dropping them into salt water for a bit and then transferring them back into the tank. Are you saying this algae is fine and will go away? I really want to get coraline going. I did get three small pieces of live rock caked in that last night and I am ready to spread that all over.

My Nitrate level is near zero but I don't have much plant life in the tank yet and it is only a two month old tank.

Yes, the brown stuff looks like diatoms. Perfectly normal, they will go away on there own as the cycle moves along.

Really? So I don't have to go through the hassle? Will it inhibit the ability of coralline growing?

Would it be better just to scrub it off and then put the live rock back in and brush the coralline rocks a bit in front of a jet and let that spread?

    I appreciate the input!
