Picked up this frag about a week ago and noticed this green growth on it. You cant see it when they are opened but when closed it looks like an elonged semi-firm green tube. I poked it a few times before putting it into the tank and it doesnt move and seems firmly attached. Has not growth, moved, or changed over the last week.

4 open zoas above 4 below a green growth. There is one polyp completely closed the growth is almost right below it

HMm if it is a sponge I would be ok with that I think, I am pretty sure its not bubble algae but do you think thats a possibility?

No I think it's a sponge. You can remove the frag and take a soft tooth brush and remove it. Be it sponge or algae type, removing it with a soft tooth brush will in the long run benefit the frag in the long run.

Would the sponge eat into the zoa colony? I could attempt to get it off but way afraid of hurting the polyps themselves

No the sponge may simply over grow the zoanthids eventually and possibly prevent some from opening fully. If you are doubtful of any adverse effects from the sponge growing on the frag leave it. I have left them and later removed the sponge with it began to over grow the polyps.
