    Hi All,

    Can someone tell me if the green, fuzzy stuff I have on the back wall of my nano cube and live rock is normal? My tank has been running for about 3 weeks now. I started it with DeIonized water, 12.3 pounds of base rocks and 1.5 pounds of live rock.

    My parameters are:
    Ammo = 0
    Nitrite = 0
    Nitrate = 0
    PH = 8.4
    S.G. = 1.025

    It started showing up about 2 weeks ago.

    Looks like a form of GHA(green) hair algae).This is occurring partly because you are cycling the tank, which is causing nitrates. The GHA is consuming those nitrates...explaining your reading of 0 nitrates... You will probably have to manually remove it with the amount you have. It can also be scrubbed of rocks, using a toothbrush.

    Seano,

    I have 2 snails and 2 Hermit crabs in the tank. Is there another CUC member I can add to eat that stuff or just do like you suggested and remove it manually? Also, what's the best way to manually remove it?

    Thanks

    I don't know of a cuc member that you can add that will specifically eat GHA. Best way to remove it is with your bare hands or use rubber cleaning gloves if you don't want to get your hands wet. Is should come up in clumps.

    Thanks Seano,

    One more question, How do I prevent GHA in the future?

    Keep nitrates down. Have a good skimmer. The reason you have it now, is because you have nitrates, which is a natural part of the cycle. At least that shows your cycle is part way over. Just keep testing the water & wait for your params to level out (once you have removed the GHA). Then when your params have leveled to 0, you are almost done with your cycle.

    Glad I could help.
