Do you think a sand sifter starfish would eat this algae or do they only eat detritus? I have several areas of this. I was also sugested Algae Magic from Marc Weiss which I am waiting to get to try.

Minimum tank size for a sandsifting star is 120 gallons. They are require a DSB and the tank needs to be established for at least a year. Any less than that and they'll starve and add nutrients to your tank.

Just use your fingers and stir it up a little

I wouldnt recommend a star fish for a 46. Why dont youtry things like nassarius snails, or hermits. They will put the algae back into suspense in the water and allow the filter to do what it does best...

    Green Sand

I have tried mixing it and within a day it comes right back. Today I gravel celaned the sections but since I did not have new water to replace I put back in the same water without the sand that was taken out. I will get some Nessarious Snails. Any other suggestions.

By putting that water back in, now all of the detritus which was feeding phosphates to that localized area is now spread all over your tank.
