    I would not recommend it...When you say gravel...do you mean like, rock? or those little plastic things in freshwater?

    It sounds like you mean either an under-gravel filter[old technology], or using gravel, as the filtration. This is done similarly with bio-balls, which is not commonly used anymore either, accept for FOWLR. The balls have to be cleaned frequently.

    Tell me about it...I hate them bioballs..i am going to have to clean them like either once a month or every 2 weeks...

    It is a dry heat, yeah right !
    Much better methods for control of nitrates and a medium for the growth of nutrifying bacteria that carry out the nitrogen cycle have replaced the old undergravel filter.

    It is better to provide ample live rock to do the work as it provides a medium for growth of aerobic on the exterior and anaerobic within the porus structure of the live rock.
