So last night I got a second maroon clown, the new one is the bigger one, its about 2x the size of the original which has been in the tank for about 8 months or so.

I had it in a plastic jar, holes drilled, and I stuck the the jar close to the other clown's area in the tank cause left free it floated around. It's been there since about 9 am today. So I got in and cracked the jar and released the new clown. He's been hanging around the original's area and the the original is hiding somewhere new.

    What should I expect next?

you should probably expect them to not mate, because u bought a bigger clown, always buy smaller...the one thats been in ur tank has probably changed to female, and if the new one is bigger, its probably female too...and there is no going back to male once they are female...maybe u'll luck out tho?

    ... What:confused:

The LFS has been telling me for the longest it's either bigger or smaller, as long as its atleast 2x in one direction or another.

    Sigh....

from my knowledge, you should always buy smaller, esp if you have had the other one a while, single clowns will always become female...thats why you want to buy a way small one (preferably a small one in a tank with multiple clowns. That way they havent made their life decision yet, and when you put them with a bigger clown (female) the smaller one will become male.

ditto on what the other said. when I paired up my maroon clowns I had to put the little one in a plastic strawberry container with the onion mesh over the top since the female (the larger one) kept beating him up so badly. Once she got used to him I let him out of his cage and the two have good ever since...and that was 9 years ago

It would appear that I really ate the sandwhich on this one. I've been waiting for over a month for the LFS to get this clown in, and I saw that it was bigger, I didn't think anything of it, since they've been telling me for months it's either bigger or smaller, as long as it's one or the other.

    Sigh...

I saw some cat and mouse this morning as I was running out, I didn't have time to intervene, and I won't be home tonight.

... This probably won't end well...

Yep what kevin said. The clown you have now, being the only one has turned female. The new one which is bigger probably means its female(the females are larger than males). So there is a very good chance you gonna have fight night in your tank. And as also said once female there is no going back. Maybe see if you can return it and look for a much smaller one. The best thing is if there in a group get the smallest one, as it is either still unsexed or a male.

Thanks Kevin, I'll be getting back to you on that if I can't find one locally.

I'm home and my original guy looks fine. I guess she proved to be the badder badass.

I THINK I saw the newer one behind some rocks in the darkness. Im about to go searching. I have no clue how I'm gonna get it out the tank if it's behind all those rocks :)

    UPDATE:

I just spend the last hour searching for that new clown. Around the tank, in the overflow box, in the sump, and its nowhere to be found. I have a large red crab and a few little hermits, I have a feeling that it died and the red crab had a feast. Its just not making sense.
