I found this gorgeous dottyback from my LFS so of course I had to bring him home. He's the first fish in my tank. He's been spending ALL of his time in hidding. Is this because he's just getting used to the surroundings or is this his natural habit? He was feeding on the first and second day but now he won't even touch the frozen mysis I feed him.

Also, I was wondering if he coud use a friend like a clown fish. Is this possible for them to live in peace together?

I must say your first impression was rather immature, but, let's try and move on :)

What size tank have you got and how long has it been running?

I got a dottyback. I do have a pair of clowns and he doesn't bother them, but he has chewed the tail off my sleeper goby. They are VERY aggressive with their area. I had them in a 15. I now have them in a 75 and it isn't as bad. I am currently looking for a home for my dottyback because he isn't working out in my tank.

i've got a 29 gallon. its been running about a month. I believe it has already cycled. It's got some green algea. Everyday I have to scrap it off the glass. I'm also starting to get hair algea. I have about 30lbs of live rock.

Will I ever be able to enjoy this dottyback or is he just going to hide out all the time?
If he's not suitable for this tank, who can I give him too? Do most LFS take fish for store credit or something?

its normal for them to hide, especially when there the only fish in the tank.
he may not eat until its used to the tank.

it would feel more comfortable not being the only fish in the tank at first. the boldness of the clown may help him come out too. i hope your watching your parameter though

sorry no pictures. It seems like the strawberry dotty is doing fine, i guess. he's not swimming around but he's seems to be liking the spot he's got for right now. i can see his head poking out and he seems to be alive and not struggling. un... the parameters are fine i think. I know I have a lot to learn and I will make mistakes but I guess the fewer mistakes the better off I am.

For the future add the more aggressive/territorial fish in last but anyway good luck. If still not eating try live brine
