I am scoping out my first reef setup and would like a nice stand/canopy combo since it will be in a prominent spot in my house. Can anyone recommend (or dis-recommend) any retailers? Does anyone have any experience buying combos from fishtanksdirect.com?

I am considering a tank in the 48" to 72" length range and am in NJ, on the off chance anyone knows of anything local.

    Thanks!

    Hey man welcome to 3Reef~!!!!

As a fellow jersey Reefer I can tell you that craigs has a TON of listings for used tanks.

I actually might know a few ppl who are looking to get rid of tanks in that size range.

They would be located in North Jersey.

If you are interested Send me a PM and I can make some contacts with the people I know . . .

I would either build my own or find someone to build one for me. I really cannot recommend any of the Store bought stands, at least not in good conscience. As far as I am concerned most of the manufactured one's are over priced crap.

There is a company on eBay who builds custom cabinets and they also build Stands, they do some really nice work. I have a friend who bought one and I was really impressed when he got it.

    Thanks for the replies guys.

I know there are screaming deals on tanks on Craigslist. It's just that the stands are usually crap. Even the nicer manufacturer stands are usually "overpriced crap" as gazog point out. I'm going to put this thing in my living room so I would like a nice piece of furniture, not the standard pine setup (not that there's anything wrong with pine, it is what I have been using for FW tanks for the last 20+ years).

I will check out Dayton Cabinet.

If its furniture your looking for you will like Dayton, thier stuff is solid Oak, really nice and the best part about it is you finish it the way you want it, or they will for extra.

No petsmart. They told me to buy the tank I have now. I got a pretty good deal, but here is the kicker. I hadn't done all my research on saltwater tanks. Now I wish I would have bought one with an overflow and holes for a sump. The tanks at petsmart are for fresh water the sales people are tricky. Just because "it will work" doesn't mean it's the best option for you.

Also be patient. Wait for the perfect tank to pop up. Every time I buy a fish tank I find something better a week later, then too late.

And the stand is a piece of crap. It looked good in the store but as soon as the kiddo hit it with her shopping cart the paint came right off.

Holy crap some of the stands in that thread are crazy. I couldn't build something like that if my life depended on it but I definitely can't buy a manufacturer stand now!
