For a 50 gallon system with 20ish gallon sump, would a 300w heater work?
Also, are Fluval M series any good, or should i just go with my tried and true Finnex titanium?

300 Sounds like overkill to me. My 120 total gallon system uses a 300w. I personally prefer eheim jager. But I have heard a lot like the fluvals.

A lot of people recommend running 2 smaller heaters that are capable of heating the tank to temperature so if the heater fails and sticks on it doesnt cook your livestock OR run a controller on your heater. Heaters brand preference varies a lot person to person as well.

I'm in this hobby over an 26 years and the only heater brand I would recommend with a clear conscience is Jäger.
Reasonable price, simple construction and reliability :)

I love my ViaAqua Tiitanium 100 watt Heater. It has an external thermostat so you can set the exact temp with confidence instead of guessing. It also has a seperate sensor to detect the temp of the water.

That is the exact heater I have! I can't find them on US sites anymore though.

The link I posted to the heater is a LFS around me. You can order it from them. ;D It is the only place locally that I have seen them though.

+1 Definitely Jager has proven to be the most reliable. Titanium heaters don't seem to be. I will use them is space is limited though, as they can be "okay". If I go titanium, Finnex is usually my preference, ViaAqua isn't bad either.
