I finally decided to go sock less after 2 years with. Way too much maintenance and hassle. My main concern is stoping the snails from getting into my sump and getting into my skimmer, reactors, etc. I was thinking of picking up some screen of some sort from Home Depot and zip tying it around the intake of the PVC pipe. This should stop the snails, but not be big enough to impede flow of water. Any thoughts?

Egg crate, just cut to fit inside the hole so its nice and tight.

if not that then you could try the clear mesh the alot of people use as aquarium toppers.

Would this screen you make resemble a small sock, lol? Have you considered using a small mesh sock instead of cloth? Anything that you use will need to be cleaned at some point.

Everyones a comedian.. No I wasn't planning a sock, I was going to get netting or screen or something with big squares, but small enough to block snails wrap it around the intake and the holes in the PVC, and zip tie it on. Wont have to change it because it won't catch particles or anything but should block the snails from getting in.

I would suggest a filter sock due to easy of maintenance and get the mesh not the felt.
