Hey everyone, been following the forums for awhile and just began setting up my 55 gallon aquarium. I am going over specific corals/fish/inverts I would like to add and either the watchmen goby or yellow headed jawfish are on my want list. I dont plan to do a DSB (aiming for 2 inches) and I know that both fish need a couple of inches. I was curious if when I put either in my tank, can I add some substrate around the area I see them burrowing to help them but not have to worry about the problems of a DSB?

They will move sand around so adding some wear they're burrowing won't do a whole lot. 2 inches might be enough but you might want to go closer to 3.

2 inches would probably be fine, especially if the goby is eating prepared (flake or frozen) food from the fish store. Just keep the rocks on the bottom, then add the sand.

the jawheads at the LFS get like 1" of sand in their tank and pile it into big 3" deep mounds. As long as they have sand they will find a way to construct their burrow from what I've seen.

Appreciate the help everyone. I begin Tuesday night! I picked up some LR from a local person and have had it curing in my parents garage for the past 3 weeks. Cant wait to start putting the pieces together.
