how strong is tempered glass? if you have a 55 gallon that isnt sitting on a stand perfectly flat can it break? for whatever reason i cant get my tank to sit flat on my stand it lays level and flat all along the black trim of the tank ecxept one corner. the one corner is a good 3-5mm off the stand. i shimmed it with cardboard and its solid now. but can it stress and crack in the future?

Haha! It's not a 12x12 end table! It's the stand that came with the tank :) tempered glass will usually only break if a corner is hit right on the edge just perfectly. I used to work with glass every day. Your tank is fine nick, don't worry! I would never steer you I the wrong direction

It can definitely crack. I've had it happen to me with a 55g tank. Get some 1/2" or a little thinner sheets of styrofoam and place them between your tank and stand.

In my opinion I would rather have the glass on the stand rather then the wait being unevenly distributed across a soft surface

A glass tank is designed so that all of the strength is in the 4 corners. The corners are therefore the only parts of the tank that need to be supported, but they do need to be supported. If they are not, it certainly can crack.
