I don't know if they do or not. I'm most certainly not a clam expert. I should have stated that it hasn't been moved from the location where it prospered.

EDIT: It was bigger than 12 inches as stated by Mel. Easily 14 to 15 inches.

Curt we lost one a few yrs back the same way one day it was fine the next day it was dead But the up side was also all the algae and clove polyps Amcarrig was having with that 90 where all dead as-well :) The skimmer pump had developed a crack in the epoxy and was leaking voltage into the system and I brought that clam up from Richmond and My daughter and her husband had had it for 5 yrs and it was fine here for well over a yr as we fought that Bryposis problem she was having . We lost a Gigas to the clown fish pair that took up living inside it when the clam died I removed it then they took up in my Elegance and killed that . The little male Perc remains the female did not fare so well when trapped .. She died ):

She had a couple skimmer issues recently with the pump not wanting to start back up. Time for me to borrow a voltmeter me thinks. Thanks guys.

Sorry for your loss, it was truely an awesome clam. Altho, i do wonder, why feed its remains to your puffer. Id be tempted to eat them myself with some garlic and sesame sauce....

    Clams are well tasty!!

Check all the wires for cracked insulation also from lights to heater a lot of the titanium heaters will also crack on the wire inlet seal if placed in a slow or low flow area of the system .

LOL tangster. I have 4 clams in my tank now. I know when clams are dead, unfortunately I have seen a few. You don't need to come off so condescending. :)

I have seen 1 maxima that was in worse shape than that come back to perfect health. Actually, that powder blue ultra maxima is doing well in my tank as we speak.

As far as feeding a clam, they really don't need any extra food beside lighting, not at the size we get them in.

Crabs will do that, that green maxima I had was dismantled by an emerald crab.

thanks all! I never thought about stray voltage! As said, I have been having a lot of skimmer issues...hopefully Curt knows somebody with a voltage meter.
This clam hurt....was a center piece in my tank. The speed in which it died was amazing....literally hours.

On another note...my huma huma trigger and my niger was the first one to go after the clam when I put it in. When it started to bite it (the clam never tried to close up...so it was toast) it did a stress spawn  However it allowed the trigger to go right into the center of the mantle and take a hunk

I'd offer up my volt meter if you weren't so far away. I'm sorry for your loss, it was a beauty. I lost my clam and my small anemone (and my entire fuge actually) due to my return pump blowing out and frying my entire fuge. I had ~12VAC in my fuge water, which was also 110º. I even had a grounding probe in place too.
I emptied out the water in my fuge and replaced it with fresh saltwater. Like a dummy, I replaced the pump and ran my tank as normal. The die off remants in my fuge wiped out my nems and clam. The only things that survived were my maroons.

Sorry Mel, that was a great looking clam.

If nothing else tho I guess you have a really nice big clam shell to display... they look really nice cleaned up and put on a shelf.

And I'm sure you won big points with your puffer!
