Was reading a few articles and thinking about my resilient and out of control pod population in my tank so I'm considering my first fish in my 29g BioCube to be a beautiful Mandarin goby. I am setting up a tub with about 5gal of saltwater, some phyto-plankton, a air stone, and a fluorescent light to see if anything will grow over the next few weeks. Any comments or suggestions?

Just added some Fiji Live Mud, about 1/2 lb of live sand, and moved some of my bioballs to the pod tank. Also cleaned my filter media in the pod tank so it's gonna be a little dirty for a while but I should already have a few little guys crawling around in there, before I know it I'm expecting a huge burst in pods. I think it'll all work out as long as it doesn't begin to smell and cause my GF to make me clean it out :)[IMG]

Forget the mandarin. It can clan out a tank that size in a couple weeks and then starve to death.

I agree, they hunt all day long and a tank of this size would get cleaned out really quick.

Even with a population that's out of control and another tank that's dedicated only to growing pods? Not to mention the Mandarin would be the only fish in the tank until I put in a small yellow goby or damsel (forget the breed)

Mandarins eat thousands per day. 5g isnt enough to breed pods for them long term. Ive barely been able to keep mine alove on a 65g woth 10g fuge and supplemental feedings of ocean nutrition pellets (previous owner trained him)

Yes, your better bet would be to try and find one thats already eating frozen foods and such. A mandarin can wipe out a population on a 75 gallon tank with a good sump and farm.

    Let alone a 29 gallon.

Another one bites the dust then. It's hard choosing a correct fish to start with especially in a 29g system. Clowns grow much bigger than most stores advertise along with probably most every other species

I know how you feel. I want one bad, but it's better for it, that I don't get it

I have a pair of percs in the 29... they're fine for it.
