So I recently added a very small dose of GFO to my system (1/2 dose of Chemipure Elite which is mostly carbon with a little GFO.) Ever since I added the chemipure the coral has been looking ehhhhhh. The xenia took the biggest hit and it is looking VERY sad. I just pulled the GFO out and did a water change. Will the xenia recover? I am positive it is the GFO because the day I added it things went down hill. Also I have added it before for a small amount of time and the coral seemed to not like it.
So no GFO for me. How do I get rid of my small spots of cyano?
    Thanks

using the half dose was a smart move JJL

its pretty common for corals to react to changing conditions, even ones designed for the better, and that is why half dose is best until corals adjust , which IME they generally do

you probably have a dual effect going on there, clearer water due to carbon and reducing phosphate levels due to the GFO

IME these corals will come around once they have adjusted to the new water conditions

increasing flow can help with cyno, but increases flow could have same effect on corals like Xenia, leathers and LPS for example, they may tend to expand less as a form of protection against increased water movement

I think I would need a TON of mangroves to make any difference.
Do you put them in a media reactor? Do they fight against cyano?

I think what im going to do is wait for my mp10es which I am ordering in the next week, see if that does the job then if it does not I will put a very small dose of GFO in and rise the amount slowly over a long span. But, I am still planning on getting the mp10 whether it gets rid of my cyano or not. Would using the mp10es affect the coral extension drastically?

any changes can make the corals retract until they become accustomed to the changes
I recently upgraded one of the powerheads on my softy /LPS set up and my torch, elegance and bubble coral most notably inflated less than that had previously for about a week or so, but are back to how they used to be now
its a natural reaction to change, they do not know if its the start of a much worsening storm, and as such they seem to have a natural instinct to close up a little and prepare for the worst
when it never gets worse, they come back out again

    Ok, that makes sense 8)
So I am going to get the mp10es and see if that solves my cyano problem, if not then I will use small amounts of GFO :)
    Does that ^^^^^^ sound good?
    Thanks, Steve
