I am attempting to help a friend get his tank up and running. I have never had much experience with these external pumps. Everything is plumbed and the sump is 1/2 full of water. When the pump is turned on you get an initial blast of water and then nothing. Externally set up. Any advice on what to do with this thing would be great. Thank you!

I do not believe that they are self priming. You need to fill them with water manually to start them and there really shouldn't be any air in the intake side of the pipes/hose. Usually the best way to use them is to drill the sump, near the bottom and connect them to that, with a ball-valve, shutoff, so it can be disconnected. I hate pumps that don't self prime though, they can be a PITA.

Yes I drilled the sump and put in a bulkhead and then ran the line directly into the pump. The return line is full of water up to about a foot high. Pump gets turned on, I get a blast of water, and then nothing. Completely stuck on this damn thing.

hmm... is it a new pump or a used pump? If used, maybe it just needs to be cleaned? Sorry, I'm kind of stumped.... Also, did you make sure the pump is below the water line :p J/K

Its used but its in good shape. I checked the insides out and the pump is operating as I think it should. Yes the pump is below the water line in the sump. Still nothing. Initial blast and then nothing. Its as if the propeller isnt turning but it is turning. Completely stumped here.
