I currently have a 125g future reef tank cycling and am now starting to plan which type of fish to get. Well I already knew I wanted a community tank but now that I finally got everything set up I now have time to choose which species to get. I probably gonna go with 7-8 fish depending on which species I choose. This is what I was thinking:

    1 sailfin tang
    1 purple tang
1 powder blue tang or blue hippo tang
    2 percula clownfish

I havent decided on the last 2-3, I'm still waiting for my copy of Marine Fish to come in the mail to see what other options I have.
I know some people would say that there are too many tangs. But I've heard of people with 75g having 4 tangs together amongst other fish and doing just fine as long as you feed them well and pay attention. And I'm going to make sure to add the least aggressive first.
    Thx

You are right that is a lot of tangs and they will get big. What type of filtration are you using? Does your aquascape provide the future fish with plenty of room for these fish to hide. I know from your post that you want that many tangs but it is a risky move. I think if it were me I would only have two in you size tank. Don't get me wrong I love tangs too!

I'm sure others will chime in on this also. All in all it is your tank and your money I just don't want to see a bad outcome for you. I hope all works out good for you.

+1 on above for me, swimming space is important to these fish so even if you have the best skimmer, the best filter etc - once they start to grow, your going to need to think about returning and swapping for new juveniles ( hard to do when you have grown attached and in so many cases fish end up in smaller tanks than is best for them)

Powder blues can be tricky, I have read (never had one)
the hippo is a better choice IMHO - but it can grow very big and you know about their reputation as Ich magnets !! frustrating to say the least
love the purple myself, great fish, had one myself years ago and you got me thinking!

Thats my 2 cents ( or two pennies) worth

Yeah...watch the hippo growth!!! I have a hippo in my 90g and am going to end up trading it in in a year or so I figure. But that's alright. I have no problem trading my fish out. The adventure continues!!!!

I'm gonna think more about the tangs. I dont want to set myself up for anything negative. Like most people I'm trying to get the most colorful cool looking fish that I can come by. Any other suggestions to fill'er up?

What type of CUC (clean up crew; snails, crabs) are you going with? Personally, my favorite is the flameback angel.

    If its fish only?

Dwarf angels - awesome colours - flame, fireball, beauty - (not suggesting all 3 by the way) if they could be trusted not to nibble on corals, Id have any of them

Royal Gramma is another favourite of mine , intense colours .
