Ive also heard the cat-litter deal, i personally wouldnt do it because im still not sure on the reasoning, what i did put in is a type of sand for refugiums, its expensive and you dont get much heres the name of the product i use
Brightwell Aquatics KoraLagoon Refugium Substrate 1.4 kg
its supposed to leach essential and trace elements into my water as it passes through, but im not sure how much of this is true due to i just added it a few weeks ago, i also added a 10 lb bag of sand and just mixed it all together, and i do know there is a bunch of other product out there that can be beneficial like Miracle mud i know is another one. are you planning a refugium in the future? if you dont have a sump, and are looking to get one i would recommend the Aqueon proflex series you can have bio-balls, a fuge, and a berlin method, there completely universal when it comes to setting up, and there easy to switch from one to another
