Okay...I have a 30 Gallon tank sitting here, brand new, and a plethora of 36" Lights that I can't sell. So...frag tank.

What are the main essentials needed for a successful frag tank? I don't want to run a sump/refugium. It will not be connected to my main system.

How important is a protein skimmer?
Will a power filter be sufficient?
Will 1 Vortech MP10 be enough flow for SPS?
Should LR be placed in the tank?
    Can chaeto survive under MH/T5?

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
For a frag tank a protien skimmer if very important. Anything you can do to cut down on algae problems and remove some of the DOC. If you are going sps I would get a skmmer.

Yes you can grow chaeto under T5/Mh, just acclimate it and put it in an area of lower lighting.

Live rock is up to you. For a true frag tank I would not put anything other than maybe some rubble in. LR can hide detritus as well.

The MP may be fine, but you could just add a cheaper Koraila.
