There are some fish diseases that could cause welts like that. You may want to take a look at this:
    Marine Fish Diseases and Parasites

If it is damage from a bully, you may need to remove the other fish.

If it's just a scrape, you may be fine if water quality is kept pristine. If it progresses though, you may need to treat with, perhapse a broad spectrum antibiotic.

Ugh. That is some nasty looking stuff on there. :-X Thanks for the link. A couple look sort of similar, so I'll watch him a couple more days and see if anything changes.

I never see my wrasse fighting with anyone, but recently I re did the aquascape, and I'm wondering if it has anything to do with that.

If it was a fresh water fish and large enough to handle (and possible to catch, which I know is not easy in a reef tank) i would topically treat it, clean the wound with hydrogen peroxide 3% solution, then dab the wound with Iodine and apply a wound sealer.

I must admit to never doing this to a saltwater fish as I'm not sure what the consequences might be regarding filter bacteria or what effect it would have on the water chemistry, but that method always works and is much better than adding stuff to the system and hoping it works.

That sounds kind of tricky. I've never thought about doing that though either.

Its not to difficult to do, you can get a sedative from the pond world called Koi Calm, once you have caught the fish place it in a suitable sized container of its tank water and add a few drops and wait until the fish goes wobbley, then net it again place it on a piece of wet cloth (an old towel is good) and work on it quickly.

Probably the most delicate fish I've ever done this procedure on is Discus.

Koi are easy to work on as they are quiet robust but you have to be careful with smaller tropicals as you could easily over dose them.

And sorry if this is not suitable chat for a reef forum. I'm new here:-[:-[:-[

I think it is a good topic. Sounds like it could work, and you have obviously done it before with success.

I was on holiday in Mexico this August and in 1 of the bars of the resort we was staying had a very large Cylindrical Aquarium stretching from the floor to the ceiling, I guess it was about 12 feet high, it seemed very well cared for but 1 of the fish a very large Queen angel had a nasty wound on its side, that fish would have been a prime candidate for this form of treatment.

Bye the way I did mention the injured fish to the barman and he said that they was looked after by a marine biologist, anyway the next day the fish had been removed, when I asked about it again I was told the fish had gone for treatment.....
