My fish act normal when I'm around the tank. They swim around and act all fishy. Then I take out the food containers - they know (remember) what they look like. ONLY after they see food containers do they get excited and swim up to the surface near me and go nuts. I'd say they have memories.

wow, that's quite a second post. welcome to 3reef

anyway, actually it is exactly correct. That is exactly how I hear it in my head. ::)

beyond that, I disagree with your reasoning. I do not believe the fish learned it would get negative consequences if someone is there. There are no negative consequences. It's merely and simply distracted.

there is no learned behavior in that scenario. there is no cue. it's just a fish being a fish, easily distracted.

But I can see how you could come to that conclusion. And that takes me back to my earlier post, folks see what they want to see.

Again, not to say fish literally have no memory, but I don't think they remember you from me, I don't think they remember the last tank they were in, the ocean, or the last fish you had that died or what was for dinner last night.

They do remember where their favorite hole is... but I'd bet that has more to do with repetition and a homing instinct of sorts.

okay, peredhil. we who believe that fish have memories are not stating that
"they remember the last tank they were in, the ocean, or the last fish you had that died or what was for dinner last night." we are merely positive that the fish remember different individuals. thats it. i def do not believe that they miss dead fish, or remember that when i walk over to the freezer means mysis. i do believe fish have memories....select limited memory. differentiating potential predator (strangers) from prey (me feeding them) may be instinct but instinct is in itself a memory. and if they have not memorized my build/color/look then how do they recognize me in different clothes?
