An overflow works basically like a syphon but with protection from your syphon going faster than your return pump. Because the water has to flow into the overflow box before the syphon gets it it can not take more water out of your tank then the pump can put in. Just make sure you get a pump that is rated to do less GPH than your overflow.

make sure both the front and rear box have water in them, shove an air hose in the u-tube to the apex and suck out the air.

Take the U tube and fill it with water, then put a plastic bag over it, holding it in such a way that it caps off both ends thoroughly, put it into place, and pull the bags and break the ends releasing it free into the overflow box.

This is the method I use. That tube and sucking the air is nasty.
