My parents gave me their old tank that hasnt been used for about 20 years. I am looking to start a new FOWLR tank and the filter that was in the tank is called a second nature challenger I. Does anyone know about this filter and would it be adequate for my setup. Its a 30g tank.
    Thanks

Havn't heard of this one but you could probably use it to circulate water during cycling if nothing else, provided it still works of course. It would also be a good idea to fill the tank and check for leeks before going any further, also see if you can get some water tested at lfs to make sure theres no copper traces, you may want to add some inverts somewhere down the road. After 20 years I doubt anyone can remember for sure if any copper based meds wereever used. Good luck with it! Dave

I doubt many have heard of that filter. You may have to wait for one of the old timers to chime in here.

Never heard of that filter either. Maybe you could buy a HOB Penguiun(sp?) filter just to be safe.

Actually, if your going to use another filter you should probably use it during cycling so your filter media is seeded with bacteria.

Its a very small unit with tubing running to the tank with filtration under the sand in three square pieces. Then long Pipes stick up and look like power heads and the tubing runs through the top. I pluged it in for not even a second to see if it would turn on and sure enough it did.

I know it was used for a saltwater tank before so I'm not to woried about the copper. I may just go to the hard ware store and pick up a tube of silicone and just scrape the old stuff off and reseal it for piece of mind.

sounds like an under gravel filter i would scrap it and look into a canister or good hob filter.

I wouldnt use it for a FOWLR. You live rock along with a skimmer should do the trick just fine.
