Filter sock

I was just wondering how often people change their filter socks. and also my protein skimmer doesn't pull out near as much stuff now that I added my filter sock.

 

From a video I watched every 2-3 weeks. I'm actually buying my first sock for my tank this week. It will help a lot im sure.

I also had an idea of taking them socks and putting bio balls in them and let them float around in the sump.

 

what micron are you going with?

 

Mine get changed every couple of days. I alternate between a 300 micron sock and 100 micron sock.

 

We change socks on most of our systems every 2-3 days...the longer you go the more you risk starting to produce nitrates as filter socks are a perfect place for aerobic bacteria to grow, but won't support anaerobic bacteria.

We have a bunch of them...once we get a bucket full of dirty ones we turn them wrong side out and run them in the washing machine with just hot water and some bleach.

 

Every 2 days, then I put in the wash with a bit of bleach

 

i was changing my 100 micron filter sock every 2-3 days. they get clogged and would over flow if i didnt. switched to the 200 micron and i could get almost a week out of it till it clogged. finally got a skimmer that was plus 1 actually a bit more. and removed the filter sock all together. the sponge in the over flow catches any large debris the skimmer gets the rest. now i just change the sponge. before i was changing the sock and the sponge. the sock was a pain since my sump is full and things are hard to get to

I got tired of cleaning them and have been running sockless for 6months . Have noticed no ill effects.8)

 

its so freeing to run sockless isnt it? lol
