Are you going to be doing a sump with this tank? What fish are you planning on keeping? I wouldn't recommend a canister filter for a reef tank, but that being said I've seen some beautiful tanks using them. If you are doing a sump, which I would recommend, then I would look into doing a skimmer and a fuge. That's just my two cents.

i kind of like squirrel fish and id like to have a tang and trigger that are suitable for a 55 gallon and probably a couple clowns not sure on type yet....im sure ill figure out a couple more fish too besides that, this filter would probably just be a starter and ill move on from there....i wont financially be reef ready until january so until then itll be a FOWLR

Well a sump is alot easier to do while you are setting up the tank. If you want to upgrade to a sump after the tank is setup, its alot more difficult, not saying that it cant be done.

You probably shouldnt put a tang in a 55 gallon. They need alot of swim room and they get pretty big, except for the bristletooth tangs. The trigger wont be reef safe, so if you are planning on going reef than you wont want a trigger.

ive heard mixed reviews about the tangs, some say they should be fine in a 4' with a lot of flow as long as they have a straight path to swim and even if so maybe ill grab a juvie and once its to big pass it on to someone else or start working on that tank upgrade, i do know a few people with happy healthy tangs in a tank of that size...not trying to start tang wars right now though

as for the sump ive actually been looking into building one out of an ild used tank or a rubbermaid container or something along those lines....i was thinking more along the lines of a 20 gallon with a refugem or something around that size as for plastic containers
