filter cycle

    should i change and or wash my filter media during my tanks cycling process

    What kind of filter are you speaking of? HOB...
    I wouldnt run much if any filtration while you are trying to cycle...

    Its mecananical filtration it filter media it is a dirty brown color should I was it out or will this effect my cycle

    I would rinse them in used tank water when you do next water change

    if using base rock , then doing water changes during cycle is probably pointless ( the filter would still be clean anyway)

    but when using live rock, there will be die off so water changes are beneficial IMO
    the stuff on the sponge/ filter pad will lead to higher nitrate levels if not periodically rinsed clean

    used tank water is only way to clean them as this gets rid of the sediment, crud etc but does not hurt the bacteria that are colonising the filter
