The other night I was making water at night for top off and I set the timer for 20 mins for 1 gallon of RO water and I fell asleep on the couch woke up and it was 1:00 am. I slept for 3 hours so I woke up to a flood on my hardwood floors. Everything is looking better now though. For now on I will put the gallon bucket into my 18 gallon Brute Bucket just in case this would ever happen again. That would have saved me. Has this ever happened to anyone else here?

Ouch, hardwood floors certainly don't like water....

However, your definitely not the first to do this!

Yes. I didn't fall asleep but I figured I would start to mow the lawn and would remember I was making water. Needless to say I finished mowing the whole yard THEN I remembered. DOH!
I make my RO/DI water in my laundry room so I now put the bucket on the washer so if it overflows the water will spill into the washer. Not the best solution but it's alittle safer. lol.

I do plan on getting a large water storage container (anyone know where to find these locally?) and setup a float valve with auto shut off on my RO unit.

float valves rule for this. a while ago when I had my RO/Di setup in my garage, I forgot I was making water for 2 days. If i diddn't have a float valve on that barrel I would have destroyed my pool table and a really nice set of speakers. you cant beat a 1 time $20 for an insurance policy like that.

Man it has happened to me more times, more embarrassing to admit really. I start filling my 5G bucket and since my RO resevoir is only 3G, it takes time to get that extra gallon to make my 4G batch. I usually go do work on my computer, or whatever and realize I left the RO running when I hear splashing on the floor, which is also wood. It's not fun pulling out 3 or 4 towels to mop up the mess. But it's happened to me many times too.

I think we've all done it during that time between which we own our first RO/DI unit, and our first float valve. I realize not everyone goes the float valve route, but I own one, and have a hole drilled in a single 5 gallon bucket for when making water is a necessity.

I need to buy another, at only $12 it's crazy not to. Then I can keep the float valve on the drilled 5G bucket, and make RO/DI water for water changes--headache free.

That has happened to me more than I care to admit. Every time I flooded the floor, my wife would start to laugh and say "loser" with the big L on her forehead...........we both would start laughing. But I invented a fool-proof gadget that when the water starts to over flow, an alarm goes off.
Now, am known as "the Man" and not aloser.........lmao

Go to any hardware store and buy one of those door alarms, like this one...
and a plastic pan that the water jug can fit inside. Glue the alarm section on the outside of the pan. Tie,glue or rubber band the smaller sensor to a wine cork and place on the inside of the pan. When the water starts to overflow, the cork will start to float away triggering the alarm. No more floods. If you cant picture what am saying, when I get home I will take some pics or video of mine and how I have it set up. The door alarm costs $7 and the pan was $5. It work great.

I cant tell you how many times my wife has screamed at me for forgetting to turn the RO water off, flooding the kitched! I would have to atleast take off both socks to count! : )

her screaming never really does help though, as I keep forgetting.........

Different strokes, my friend. $7+$5=$12. Same price for a float valve. No pans or overflowing necessary.

But--it IS nice to be THE MAN. :)
