Well at least it makes sense to me now. Isn't there any way to have another family member (or family friend) there that she trusts? Just would hate to see your tank have to wait until Monday, then find out all is lost.:(

I am so sorry about your situation. One thing that I have learned in this hobby is that when you least expect it something goes wrong. You always need a back up plan. When we go away for any reason I have a friend that comes over while we are gone to look in on our tanks. I consider myself lucky.

Your mom seems to be doing her best. Maybe when you get back you can devise a back up plan just in case something like this happens again you can be prepared. Hope everything turns out o.k.

Hope it all works out for you. I can imagine that a mom would make assumptions when a clown is taking host to something or a blue hippo is hanging out in between two rocks and not moving.

Just tell her not to buy anything when the LFS employee arrives until she talks to you first. I can imagine the type of "panic buys" people can get sold on while trying to find a solution.

If you have not dosed anything, in the situation I would first check to see if the heater has locked up. If not, do a nice size water change and run carbon if possible. Remember, we, the tank owners, are the biggest threat to out tanks. Doing less is really doing more. HTH.

i was thinking maybe you can send her some test strips, so when you call for a quick check she can give you some quick, (if slightly inaccurate) feedback. I think that would at least give you some peace of mind as you continue to take care of the tank and your education
