Lately ive been thinking about getting extra filters, just the hang on the back kind.

I have a wet/dry system for a 75gal for my 55 gal tank, just the type of mechanical filter i use isnt that fine, ive tried using the fine filter media kind but within 1/2 a day bubbles are blowing out, because the water flow has been restricted due to a blocked filter and have to keep changing the media everyweek.

Also my Chemipure bags are getting blocked because so little fine matter passes through the media and sitting on the bags blocking water flow.

I was thinking of getting a pair of Biowheel filters to hang on the back to help with filtration and get more circulation going.

would it do any harm or is it 100% a good thing?

there's no harm in overfiltering. just make sure that the current isn't too strong for the fish. other than that, you'll be just fine.

Bio-wheels are the best type of HOB filtration. You can run them with no filter media just the bio wheels and they do amazing. With no media in them there is nothing to clog with detritus and cause nitrates. The wheels never clog and never need cleaned so they are a truly maintenance free filter IMO.

while not disagreeing with what is said so far... they are a bit pointless. circulation is very limited. if you do use their filters, it's just more maintenance with extremely limited gain.

You'd be far better off adding more base rock... adding/upgrading skimmer... feeding less... I don't know what specific problem you're trying to address...

it won't hurt... but it won't really help either.

if you're wanting it just to run carbon or phos-ban or something like that, you could. or you could just run it in your sump if you have one.

I do have a wet/dry system with a skimmer, phosban reactor, uv sterilizer.
the problem is, above the bio balls where the mechanical filter is at, i use a filter floss what isnt that great to get the fine particals, and the dirt goes to my wet/dry
ive used fine filter media and it gets blocked pretty much right away.\

i just thought of getting hang on filters to improve mechanical filtration

If you want better mechanical filtration I would do more expermenting with other filter types in your wet-dry. There are lots of types of sponge/filter pads/filter socks etc. If you're using fine filter media you will probably want to change it very regularly anyway, I've heard of some people changing filter pads/sponges etc every day of the week. You don't want food etc getting caught and breaking down in the media.

Lots of people don't use any mechanical filtration (or wet-dry filters) as well, have you considered that?

the only mechanical filtration I use is a skimmer. other than that, 100% biological (live rock and so forth).

try using a 200 micron filter pad on your drip try in wet/dry and rinsing it with tank water every 3-4 days works for me.
