Hey Vinny !!..yup..It's a soft start, but the slack or play in the Evo design that I point out in the video is what does make a clicking sound when it starts and stops...not ANYTHING like the older models..but still, it could be irritating for some folks depending on the DT location. I mainly did this because Nitty Gritty was having a problem and I wanted to help him out,(and he has the Hydor wavemaker) and during my adventure I decided to just go ahead and test it on mine....glad I did..it really worked out better...like I said..always room for improvement ! ...I ended up only doing it to 2 of mine..the other two I cannot hear enough to bother with...and again I say, I think they quiet down as they break in. ;) Its like any other DIY in this hobby...might work for some and not for others.8)

Thanks for the info and great DIY. I may do the Hydor WM I was hesitant because I am aware of hard starting WM's being hard on the PH.I think I was more affraid the noise would bother my fish more then anything. I think I am going to start a 3reef WM review thread to get a better idea of what people are using and there experiences with them. Would love your input when I put it together.;)

I went ahead and put some bushings on my two 750's on a smartwave and they both stopped making their clicking noise. I think that they lost a little bit of power maybe with the bushings adding friction but if i shaved down the thickness a bit I could likely reduce that.
When I got back from work I noticed that both of my PH's were randomly running in reverse. Turns out that adding the bushings to the shaft means the shaft can't move forward far enough to hit the reverse stops in the cover any more.
