Thats because you equalise the inside and outside air temperature and the water don't condence so easely on the glass, still got to wipe it though. But when it gets cold it freezes. First time i had to use my car scraper in the house lol ;D Its doen't change the rate of evaporation it just lets the humidity out of the romm, it let your house or room breathe, lol. a ventilation system, dehumdifier, ac, airexchanger would help all that.

A humidity sensing fan has been a lifesaver for me. If it gets over 50% in the room the fan kicks on and vents to the outside. It's only .7 sones too so you have to actually have to "try" to hear it.

If you have an ATO, evap is great to keep a tank cool as mentioned. But you are right, without it, you want to avoid it as much as possible.

Their's also another method, putting a cover on your tank will reduce evaporation; glass, plastic, with hinges or slidding they have them and thats their purpose. Inconvenience, the light penetration.....

I lost approx a gallon in 3 days on my 38gal system. I am going to try and make a cover for the sump area and see if that cuts down on the evaporation a bit.

A cover goes a long way, I lose less than a gallon a week on my 34gal because everything is covered. The rear part of the cover is plastic, front is glass with thin rubber seperating the two so it can flip open.
