I received my overflow box yesterday and am pumped to get everything set up. However, I have been reading Eshopps mods to keep it quiet when transfering water to the sump. But I've noticed that Eshopps has added what looks to be an air tube glued to the PVC downpipe, along with two foam inserts. My question is where do the two foam inserts go? It seems as if they go into the pvc drain tube, but i would think it would restrict flow, or get logged somewhere.

I would make a hofer gurgle buster for the overflow box. I use one and it is much quieter than the manufacturer recommendations.

    Link to make it:
    Hofer Gurgle Buster

It took about a half hour to make since sanding down the bushing manually can take a while. If you have a dremel it would take 5 minutes.

    ok,
I thought of doing this mod right off the bat so I wouldn't have to mess with it again. After that is added, would I just PVC sement it to the bottom of the bulkhead, or just run it threw? I want to prevent any leaking.

Do not insert those skinny foam inserts--those are only there for packing. They must have just recently started doing the air tube thing as neither one of my overflows purchased about 8 months ago had it.

There are a few things that you can do to make the overflow box quieter:

-Use that air tube and tune it by slowly pulling it up or pushing down until it helps the most

-If that air tube is still a little noisy, try a fresh airstone. Make sure it's a clean stone and not all gunked up. You my need to retune the optimal position of the tube once you add this.

-Cut out a foam insert to fit a little ways into the top of your overflow box. This will significantly cut down on your noise and if combined with the above it should almost eliminate it.

well I have my installed my overflow box without doing any mods. With that glued in air chamber in the pvc downtube i just added a hose and adjusted it until the noise had stopped. However now, it seems as if I need more suction out of it. I have tried lowering the black intake box in the tank, but it will only suck so much water down. I have a Mag7 pump, and had to close the ball valve a bit to slow the water down. Should I look into drilling several holes into the downtube in the overflow box for a faster suction?
