My sister and I were talking about what fish to get for my tank. She is big on Tank-bred fish and not getting wild caught fish. The thing is, she is a freshwater fish keeper. Nearly all fish in the freshwater hobby have been bred in the home aquarium, or are "tank-bred".

Aren't most saltwater fish wild-caught? I think it's mainly just damsels/cardinals/clowns that have been bred...

What is the ratio of endangered species vs overall species of wild-caught SW fish? How many of these fish we have in our hobby are endangered species?

Unless owned before they were put on the endangered list, none.

As for the ratio, that is pretty much impossible to give you.

I don't think your allowed to privately keep endangered fish. I'm pretty sure thats against the law. And getting a black-market percentage or ratio is most certainly a WAG.

more and more saltwater fish are being bred everyday, I'm surprised how many species ORA can breed. but yes a significant portion are wild part and its cheaper to catch them usually.

some cardinals are endangered, shame on you banghai keepers ;).

here is a nifty pocket guide for fish you shouldn't buy if you think like your sister.

I should point out being on the Endangered species list of our government and being a endangered species are two different things.

Also I should point out going on the endangered species act list of animals isn't necessarily a good thing, It forbids captive breeding efforts that sell to hobbiests. Now cites on the other doesn't forbid it.

Hmm, I thought most were tank-raised now since making it on the list in 2007ish?. They are fairly easily bred in capitivity. I know they were exploited for decades, but I thought they were making a comeback.

its cheaper to catch a fish then to raise it most of the time, ORA pajamas are usually 10 dollars more then wilds in stores. I don't think I have actually seen a ORA raised banghai before only wild ones.

Yeah, I did notice that most Tank bred fish cost a few dollars more. But this difference is not usually a lot unless the wild one already costs a lot or is unique.

ORA's website doesn't seem to have that much. I don't see any of their dragonets(?)...does the site have all of their ish, or is it just some?
